What is a C.S.A.? It stands for Community Sponsored Agriculture. A C.S.A. enables someone to get fresh fruits and vegetable directly from a farmer. My family's C.S.A. was with Wellspring Farm. Last winter my family paid a sum of money to the farm. Beginning in early June we went to the farm every week and picked up our share of produce. Our last visit to the farm was in late October. Other things you might find at a C.S.A. are: flowers, eggs, seeds, honey and different kinds of meat.
We wanted to be part of a C.S.A. because we like eat organic fruits and vegetable. Organic means that the plants are grown without any chemicals. Wellspring is an organic farm. Also, my family enjoys visiting the farm and knowing where our food comes from. We even got to know the farmers. The biggest benefit of a C.S.A. is that everything from the farm is local. This means it's fresher, it's healthier, it tastes better and it saves money and energy. When we pick up our food at the farm we eliminate the need for gasoline and air pollution!
Following is a sampling of some of the tasty food we had to eat this summer!
Swiss Chard
My family also had an organic garden at home to grow things we didn't get from the farm. Some of the things we grew were: pumpkins, sunflowers, kale, green beans, purple beans, broccoli, cucumbers, apples, onions and squash.
I had lots of fun at the farm this summer. I recommend you try it too!
